Floor of the Mouth Cancer
Cancers arising under the tongue, in the floor of the mouth, can affect swallowing and speech. Diagnosis is by biopsy, and the plan is built to preserve function.
Treatment
Tongue cancer is a treatable cancer. The options depend on its type, location and stage. Because treatment can affect speech and swallowing, the plan is built to preserve as much function as possible.
Most tongue cancers can be removed through the mouth, using a laser where helpful. For tongue-base cancers, robotic surgery gives easier access and generally a faster recovery than standard approaches. Where the disease has spread to the neck, lymph node surgery is added. If a large part of the tongue must be removed, tissue from elsewhere in the body can rebuild it for speech and swallowing.
During surgery, pathologists confirm that all of the cancer has been removed. Radiotherapy is an option for early or advanced disease, and chemotherapy may be advised where the cancer has recurred or spread.
