Lip Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment in Istanbul
A sore on the lip that has not healed for weeks appears most often on the sun-exposed lower lip. Caught early, treatment is usually very rewarding.
Symptoms and diagnosis
Lip cancer usually begins on the lower lip as a sore that will not heal, or a patch that crusts and occasionally bleeds. Years of sun exposure and smoking are the main risk factors.
Diagnosis is made with a small biopsy. Where needed, the neck lymph nodes are checked with ultrasound.
Treatment and reconstruction
Treatment rests on removing the tumour with clear margins. The lip is the organ of speech, eating and smiling, so the second half of every surgical plan is reconstruction that preserves its function and appearance.
With small tumours, reconstruction is usually completed in the same session. For wider surgery the options are explained in detail beforehand, and healing is reviewed at follow-up.
Frequently asked questions
No. Cold sores and irritation are far more common. A sore that has not healed within a few weeks, or crusts and bleeds, should be examined.
Reconstruction is part of the plan; the aim is to preserve both function and appearance. With small tumours the scar usually fades with time, and your own expectation is discussed in advance.
Lip cancer tends to grow slowly but deepens with time and can spread to lymph nodes. Early diagnosis keeps both the surgery and the reconstruction simple.
