Tongue and Oral Cavity Cancer Treatment in Istanbul

Tongue, floor of the mouth, gums and inner cheek — an examination where every sore that will not heal is taken seriously.

Who is this page for?

For those who notice a mouth sore that has not healed for more than three weeks, a white or red patch, or pain or firmness in the tongue; those referred by their dentist because of a suspicious finding; and those diagnosed with cancer of the tongue, floor of the mouth, gum or inner cheek — or seeking a second opinion.

In their early stages, oral cavity cancers are often small and painless; evaluating a non-healing sore early changes both the extent of treatment and its outcome considerably.

What to expect at the examination

At the examination the inside of the mouth is inspected systematically, and the lymph nodes of the neck are assessed by hand and, where needed, with ultrasound. A biopsy is taken from the suspicious area; if staging is required, MRI and other imaging are arranged.

The foundation of treatment is most often surgery: the tumor is removed with safe margins, surgery on the neck lymph nodes is added when required, and tissue repair (reconstruction) is considered as part of the same plan. The aim is not only to remove the tumor but to preserve speech and swallowing as far as possible; your rehabilitation needs after surgery are planned together.

Frequently asked questions

When should the sore in my mouth worry me?

Any mouth sore that lasts longer than three weeks, does not heal on its own, grows or bleeds should be examined. Being painless is no reassurance; early-stage tumors are often painless.

If my biopsy result is bad, how does the process continue?

Staging is completed first; then the findings and treatment options are explained to you in plain language. The plan — the extent of surgery, the reconstruction and what follows — is built together, without haste, with your questions answered.

Will the operation affect my speech?

The effect depends on the tumor's location and size. The surgical plan is designed to protect speech and swallowing; where needed, reconstructive techniques and speech therapy are brought into the process. Expectations are discussed openly at the examination.

I don't smoke or drink — can I still get oral cancer?

Yes — it is less common, but possible. That is why non-healing sores need to be evaluated even in the absence of risk factors.
