Laryngeal (Voice Box) Cancer
By your side at every stage — from hoarseness to diagnosis, from surgery to voice rehabilitation.
Learn more →From the tonsil region to the entrance of the food pipe — early diagnosis and planned treatment of tumors of the pharynx.
For those with a sore throat that will not settle, catching or pain when swallowing, pain radiating to the ear, a change in the voice or a swelling in the neck; and those diagnosed with a tumor of the tonsil region (oropharynx) or the entrance of the food pipe (hypopharynx) — or seeking a second opinion.
In pharyngeal cancers, the first sign is sometimes nothing more than a swollen lymph node in the neck; finding the source requires a systematic endoscopic examination.
At the examination the pharynx is viewed directly with a flexible endoscope; neck ultrasound and, if needed, fine-needle biopsy are arranged at the same center. For a definitive diagnosis, a biopsy is taken from the suspicious area, and staging is completed with MRI/CT and, where necessary, PET.
Depending on the tumor's site and stage, treatment may consist of different combinations of surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy; the decision is made in collaboration with oncology teams, and always in conversation with you. After treatment, preserving swallowing and maintaining nutrition sit at the center of follow-up.
A catching sensation that lasts more than a few weeks, becomes steadily more noticeable, or comes with weight loss, pain or a change in the voice should be evaluated with an endoscopic examination.
It could. Pharyngeal tumors sometimes show their first sign in a lymph node in the neck. That is why every unexplained neck swelling calls for an endoscopic examination of the pharynx as well.
No. In a share of pharyngeal cancers, radiotherapy-led approaches come to the fore; in some situations surgery is the first choice. The sequence that suits you best is decided together, according to the stage and the tumor's site.
Swallowing and nutrition are addressed in their own right from the very start of the treatment plan; temporary support methods are used if needed. The aim is for you to keep your strength throughout treatment.
