What to expect at the examination
At the examination the sore is assessed, the lymph nodes of the neck are checked and a biopsy is taken for diagnosis. If staging is needed, ultrasound and MRI are arranged.
The foundation of treatment is removing the tumor with safe margins. Because of the lip's role in speech, eating and expression, the repair is planned together with the surgery: for small tumors direct closure is enough, while larger ones call for lip reconstruction techniques. When does a sore on my lip need to be examined?
Any lip sore that lasts longer than three weeks, crusts over and reopens, or keeps growing should be examined — especially with a history of long-term sun exposure.
How will my lip look after surgery?
The repair is planned along the lip's natural lines; the aim is to preserve both function and appearance. Expectations are explained to you honestly before surgery, according to the size of the tumor.
Does lip cancer spread?
Left late, it can spread to the lymph nodes under the jaw and in the neck; that is why the neck is also assessed at the examination and included in treatment when needed. Early diagnosis reduces this risk considerably.
