Throat (Pharynx) Cancer
Careful investigation of swallowing difficulty and throat complaints; diagnosis and treatment of oropharyngeal and hypopharyngeal tumors.
Learn more →From persistent hoarseness to diagnosis, from surgery to speaking again — a calm, well-planned road map.
For those with hoarseness lasting longer than three weeks, a catching sensation when swallowing, throat pain or a swelling in the neck; and those diagnosed with laryngeal cancer who want to understand their treatment options or seek a second opinion.
When laryngeal cancer is caught at an early stage, both the success of treatment and the preservation of the voice are far more favorable — which is why persistent hoarseness should never be brushed aside without an examination.
At the examination the larynx is viewed directly with a thin camera passed through the nose (endoscopy); this is done in the practice and takes only a short time. If a suspicious area is seen, a biopsy and imaging for staging (MRI/CT) are arranged.
Once the diagnosis is confirmed, the treatment options — surgery, radiotherapy or a combination of the two — are weighed together with you according to the stage; where needed, she works in collaboration with oncology and radiation oncology. After surgery, speech and swallowing rehabilitation are a natural part of treatment; experienced follow-up is provided for the voice prosthesis and the journey back to speaking.
Hoarseness lasting longer than three weeks, settling and then returning, or steadily worsening should always be evaluated with an endoscopic examination — especially with a history of smoking.
That depends on the tumor's location and stage. In early stages, voice-preserving treatments are usually possible; in advanced stages there are rehabilitation options for returning to speech after surgery, including a voice prosthesis. Your own situation is discussed openly at the examination.
The examination with a thin, flexible endoscope takes a few minutes; a local anesthetic spray is used when needed. Most patients describe the procedure as a mild tickling sensation.
Yes — at every stage. Quitting smoking benefits both the success of treatment and your recovery, and the subject is approached supportively, without judgment.
