Thyroid Disease Treatment and Surgery in Istanbul

From thyroid nodules to papillary, follicular and medullary thyroid cancer — diagnosis, surgery and follow-up in the same hands.

Who is this page for?

For those found to have a thyroid nodule during a check-up; those who notice a swelling in the neck, a feeling of pressure when swallowing or a change in their voice; those diagnosed with — or being investigated for — thyroid cancer; and those seeking a second opinion before surgery.

The great majority of thyroid nodules are benign. What matters is telling apart the nodule that can simply be watched from the one that needs biopsy or surgery — and that distinction sits at the very center of Dr. Meriç Hafız's practice.

What to expect at the examination

At the first visit your history is heard, and the neck examination and thyroid ultrasound are performed in the same session. If needed, a fine-needle aspiration biopsy is also done under ultrasound guidance, usually on the same day.

When the results are in, the findings are explained to you in plain language: the nature of the nodule, whether it calls for monitoring or surgery, and — if surgery — its extent (removing one lobe or the whole gland). After the operation, the vocal cords and calcium balance are monitored with regular check-ups; whether you will need hormone medication is planned individually, according to the extent of the surgery.

Frequently asked questions

Does every thyroid nodule need surgery?

No. The great majority of nodules are benign and can be monitored with regular ultrasound. The decision on biopsy and surgery is made individually, based on the nodule's size, its ultrasound features and the biopsy result.

Is a thyroid biopsy painful?

Fine-needle aspiration biopsy is done under ultrasound guidance in a few minutes; most patients compare it to having blood drawn. You can return to your daily routine right after the procedure.

Will my voice be affected after thyroid surgery?

Protecting the nerves that move the vocal cords is the central priority of thyroid surgery. Your personal risks and the precautions taken are explained to you in detail by Dr. Meriç Hafız at the examination.

Will I need medication for life after the operation?

That depends on the extent of the surgery. When the whole thyroid gland is removed, hormone replacement is needed; when only one lobe is removed, it is not always necessary. The plan that suits you best is discussed together at the examination.
